Eaglestar jumped up to the top of Ice Rock, careful not to slip. Her small form easily made it to the top and she yowled out, "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather under the Ice Rock for a clan meeting!" She waited for her clan to gather.

Winterkit shuffled his paws nervously but excitedly. He was finally going to become an apprentice! I'll get to hunt and eat and sleep with the other apprentices now! He thought happily.

Eaglestar smiled seeing the young kits excitement. "This sunhigh, we gather together to name a new apprentice. Winterkit, come forward. From this day forward, until he has earned his warrior name, this apprentice will be called Winterpaw. I shall be his mentor," she meowed. Ripples of shock spread throughout the clan and her eyes dared anyone to speak up about it. She knew many were outraged and confused over her decision. All had expected her to take a young kit, 4 moons old as of now, as her apprentice. She was very promising after all. Strong and fast, willing to learn. But she had a very good reason for making her decision. The young tom was always getting picked on. She had been just as shy as him when she was young but he had to learn to stand up for himself. If anyone could teach him that, she could. She touched noses with Winterpaw.

Winterpaw licked his mentor's shoulder, even more excited than before. His mentor was going to be the leader of SnowClan! Winterpaw was so excited! He couldn't wait to learn how to hunt and fight- from his leader!

Eaglestar smiled at Winterpaw's excitement and many congratulations were passed around. "I'll take you around the territory at dawn tomorrow," she meowed. With the grace of a swan, she began to walk towards her den. Her head and tail were held high in dignity.

Winterpaw jumped down from Ice Rock, pride swelling in his chest. Eaglestar was his mentor! He couldn't wait to take a look around the territory!
