The leader sits on this branch and makes announcements.

Crowstar jumped up onto the branch. "Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather under Highbranch for a Clan meeting!" she yowled. As the cats began to flood in, Crowstar thought of what to tell them. "A SwampClan kit has wandered into our territory." she mewed. "And she will be held captive here for the time being."

Wolfsong looked very annoyed and confused. He was quick to yowl his protest. "She's just a kit! Shouldn't she be with her parents?" This was very unlike Crowstar. She hated taking kits as prisoners.
---------
Ashkit felt her fur fluff slightly. Some cats were givig her hostile glances while others sympathetic. Why did she think things would be any different here? At that moment, she felt she would never belong anywhere. Her eyes clouded over slightly with sadness and grief as she waited for Crowstar.

Autumn stealthily crept over to the Highbranch, hesitating slightly, she looked at the black she-cat sitting above all. She looked a lot bigger and more majestic than any adult housecat Autumn had ever seen, and Autumn was starting to have second doubts. She looked to Skypaw for comfort.

"That's our leader, Crowstar," he purred. "She's one of the youngest leaders and is pretty kind too!" Skypaw had always liked Crowstar. She seemed far nicer than the other leaders. "Leaders used to be normal kits, apprentices, then warriors like us but were good enough to be deputy. Once the old leader dies nine times the deputy takes over," he explained cheerfully. "Crowstar makes all major decisions for the clans and does ceremonies and such. Sky thinks its pretty boring but Stormpaw over there thinks its the greatest thing in the world." He snorted and motioned with his tail to the large tabby apprentice sitting at the edge of the Medicine Cat's den.

Autumn sat, quietly, taking all of this in. The leaders really did have nine lives? The elaborate ways of Clan life began to overwhelm her. Was she going to be able to handle it? Was Clan life for her?

Skypaw looked earnestly at Autumn. He looked directly into her eyes. "Are you staying? Sky thinks you should."

Autumn gazed around the clearing. There were young kits, playing around their mothers; There were young apprentices her age, grooming each other; there were older warriors, sharing prey; and finally, there were the elders, helping one another wobble around the clearing. Autumn smiled. "Yes," She mewed, breathless, "I definitely will."

Skypaw jumped with excitement, tackling his new friend. "Good!" he laughed happily. Then he got off her as if it was nothing.

Autumn jumped back in shock as Skypaw tackled her. "What," She spluttered in shock, "Was that about? I thought we were going to be in the same Clan! Why'd you attack me?"

Skypaw turned his head to the side, eyes clouded in confusion. "I was playing. Claws sheathed, see?" he mewed pulling up his paws with a mrrow of laughter. "Your so weird Autumn!" His eyes sparkled playfully and gleefully. "Skypaw didn't understand it either at first but Stormpaw showed him."

"Ohh..." Autumn mewed, still a bit confused. She pounced clumsily on Skypaw, her claws carefully sheathed, and batted at him. Her tail lashed back and forth, and she thought she was actually doing a moderately good job.

Suddenly, the young cats' playful fight was interrupted by the calm mew of Crowstar. "As I said, we are holding the young cat captive." She mewed, ignoring Stormpaw. If only he knew... Crowstar thought, her eyes gleaming with hurt. "And, one more thing. Autumn, come forth." Although Crowstar's voice was calm, her eyes were sparkling with excitement. She loved ceremonies. They were a sign of new hope in the Clans.

Autumn perked her head up, her fur ruffled from the play-fight. She looked around in fear, her heart pounding. She had not yet asked Crowstar about becoming an apprentice; was she going to get in trouble for play-fighting?

Wolfsong padded up giving Autumn a friendly push. "Go on," he meowed gently. He could tell the young cat was nervous and a bit scared. He had a feeling that Crowstar would make her an apprentice soon. He just wished he had gotten to talk with her about it first. He sat beside little Ashkit with a sigh, giving the kit a gentle look.
---------
Ashkit shook as she looked up at the much larger cat. Not even Owlstar was that big. She covered in fear and tried to edge away.
